Blood Parasite (Ehrlichiosis) in Dogs

What is a blood parasite in dogs (Ehrlichiosis)?

Blood parasites are a type of bacterial infection that is common in dogs and is usually carried by ticks. It's caused by a type of bacteria called Ehrlichia. Therefore, this disease is also known as Ehrlichiosis.

What are the symptoms of a blood parasite in dogs?

The symptoms of Ehrlichiosis usually appear after 1-6 weeks. Blood parasites in dogs is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease. If you notice that your dog is showing any of the following symptoms, you should contact a veterinarian immediately.

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Runny nose and eyes
  • Lameness
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Hemorrhages
  • Anemia

How is Ehrlichiosis Diagnosed in Dogs?

Early diagnosis of Ehrlichiosis is very important for effective treatment. Usually, the diagnosis is based on the history of the dog and the tick bite, symptoms and laboratory tests (blood and urine tests). The most commonly used laboratory tests are as follows:

  • Blood Tests: Ehrlichiosis is usually diagnosed by a complete blood count (CBC) and serum chemical analysis. The CBC analyzes blood components such as platelet count, white blood cell count and red blood cell count. Ehrlichiosis causes a low platelet count in infected dogs.
  • Serologic Tests: Serologic tests can be performed to check for the presence of Ehrlichiosis-specific antibodies. ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) test is among the most common serologic tests.
  • PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Test: PCR testing can directly detect the presence of Ehrlichia DNA.
  • Microscopic Examination: A blood sample is used to check for the presence of Ehrlichia organisms.

How to Treat Blood Parasites in Dogs?

Treatment is with an antibiotic called doxycycline given orally, usually lasting several weeks. It is very important to diagnose the disease early and start treatment early. Any anemia caused by the parasitic blood infection can be treated with steroid therapy and can allow healthy blood to be separated.

How is blood parasites transmitted in dogs?

A blood parasite is caused by the Ehrlichia bacteria entering a dog's bloodstream and settling on white blood cells. This bacteria is usually transmitted to dogs by ticks. Ehrlichia bacteria can be dangerous not only for dogs but also for humans, cats and other animals. There are other types of blood parasites that dogs can get from ticks and fleas. The other species are as follows:

  • Babesiosis
  • American Canine Hepatosis
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Flea Bite Anemia
  • Hepatozoon Canis

Can Dog Blood Parasite Transmitted to Humans?

Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial infection carried by ticks and is not transmitted directly from a dog to a human. It only occurs in rare cases when a tick bites a human directly.
