Sphinx General Care

Sphinx Feather Care

Just because a Sphinx cat is hairless doesn't mean it needs less care. In fact, the opposite is true. Cat hair absorbs and separates sebaceous secretions. In the absence of hair, your cat's skin can become oily, dirty and even smelly. Sphinxes need bathing at least once a week, regular ear cleaning and nail trimming. The vet should be asked which soap or shampoo should be used for sphinxes, which are also very sensitive to fleas. Cleaning products that dry the skin should not be preferred.

Sphinx Exercise

Sphinx cats are energetic, curious and playful. Being active and intelligent, they often need mental and physical exercise.

Sphinx Health

Sphinx cats are generally healthy cats, with an average life expectancy of 9-15 years. However, like all breeds, they are prone to certain health problems. HCM, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, is the most common heart disease in cats, and sphinx cats can also be affected.

Among the common health problems diagnosed in sphinx cats;

  • Muscle weaknesses
  • Dental disease
  • Oily skin problems
  • Heart problems are found.

Sphinx Nutrition

Sphinx cats have a big appetite and a large stomach. Since they eat more than most cats, their weight should be checked frequently. You and your veterinarian can decide how often and how you should feed your Sphinx.

Sphinxes are known for their hairless skin, muscular bodies, slanted eyes and friendly character. They are named after the famous statue of the Great Sphinx in Ancient Egypt, but this breed has no direct connection to Ancient Egypt. Sphinx cats are people-loving, playful and often very energetic. For this reason, they are often said to behave like dogs because they can be very loyal to their owners and often like to be involved in household activities.

Sphinx History

Sphinx cats are a fairly new cat breed originating from Canada. They originated in the late 1960s as a result of a natural genetic mutation in a hairless house cat. In 1966, a house cat in Ontario, Canada, gave birth to a hairless male kitten, and a teacher who adopted the kitten and the geneticist who bred the cat decided to breed this hairless cat breed. To create a new breed, these hairless cats are often crossed with other breeds, such as short-haired American and European cats, causing the gene pool to expand.
