The Maltese Terrier has an irresistible cuteness and manages to bring joy to every life it touches with its white coat, petite build and high energy. They are very loyal and friendly to the people they live with.

Maltese Terrier History

The Maltes Terrier takes its name from the island of Malta, where it originated. Dating back to the third century BC, the Terriers are considered to be the oldest dog breed in history. Although some information says that they originated in Sicily, Greece and Italy, the island of Melita, located near the island of Malta, is known as the original source of the Maltese dog's name.

The name Maltese is derived from the Latin word "Melita". In ancient times, the word Melita was used for the island of Malta as well as for the Sicilian city of Melita. Therefore, the uncertainty about the exact origin of Maltese dogs is also present in their name. The Maltese Terrier, or Maltese, is a dog breed that has been popular with people since ancient times. Over time, it gained popularity among aristocrats and nobility.
In the Middle Ages, the Maltese continued to be popular among nobles and aristocrats in Europe. The fact that Queen Mary of France and Queen Elizabeth I of England owned Maltese dogs supports this information.

Maltese Terrier Personality and Character Traits

Maltes Terriers are known for their friendly nature and attachment to people. As they are very intelligent, they can be easily trained and toilet habits can be introduced quickly. Due to their active nature, it is recommended not to leave them alone with children, as they can unintentionally cause harm. Maltese Terriers love attention and want their owners to take care of them. Therefore, they may experience separation anxiety when left alone.

Maltese Terrier Physical Characteristics

Maltes Terriers, which fascinate people with their small and cute structure, large eyes and long white feathers, can reach up to 3 kg in weight. They immediately attract attention with their loud voices and energetic nature. If their feathers are not cut, they can reach up to the ground. The most striking feature of the Maltese is its silky, straight and long hair. The coat usually reaches the ground and requires regular grooming. Malteses tend to be low shedders, making them suitable pets for people with allergies.
The Malteses' head is round and proportionate. The forehead is flat and the nose is short. Their eyes are dark in color and almond-shaped. Their ears are located at a high point and fall towards their body.

Maltese Terrier General Care

Maltese Terrier Feather Care

Maltese Terriers, which have a silky coat structure, are also known for their antiallergic coat structure. Terriers can easily share the same environment with people who are allergic to hair, and their hair should be combed at least 3 times a week. Since the hair of Maltese Terriers grows continuously, their hair should be trimmed regularly. Especially the hair around the eyes and between the paws should be cleaned regularly.

Maltese Terrier Health

Maltese Terriers have a sensitive digestive system and although they are generally a healthy breed, they are prone to the following health problems. Therefore, veterinary checks should not be neglected.

  • Knee cap problems
  • Liver problems
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Kidney disorders

Maltese Terriers are dogs that do not need exercise and do not like too much activity outside of their daily walks.

Maltese Terrier Nutrition

Maltes Terriers should use quality food specially produced for small breeds. Since their digestive system is very sensitive, they should not be given home food without consulting a veterinarian.
