What is Leishmaniasis in Cats?

Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by a parasite called Leishmania. This parasite is usually transmitted by flies belonging to the genera bedbug (Phlebotomus) and Lutzomyia. The disease can occur in various animal species and humans. Leishmaniasis in cats is quite rare, but it is more common in dogs.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease affecting humans and animals caused by more than 20 species of the protozoan Leishmania and is endemic in 92 countries, with more than one billion people at risk of infection. It is among the diseases that require global notification by the World Organization for Animal Health.

What Causes Leishmaniasis in Cats?

Leishmaniasis is transmitted by the bite of flies carrying the Leishmania parasite. When the parasite infects the blood, it enters the white blood cells and begins to multiply.

What are the symptoms of leishmaniasis in cats?

Leishmaniasis symptoms may vary from cat to cat. The most common symptoms are as follows:

Skin Lesions: The most common symptom is skin lesions. These lesions can often be observed as sores, scabs, rashes and partial or complete hair loss. The lesions are usually concentrated on the cat's head and ears.

Weight Loss and Loss of Appetite: Cats often experience rapid weight loss as a result of loss of appetite.

Fatigue: Cats may experience general weakness and loss of appetite.

Increased Thirst and Urination: Symptoms of kidney disease in cats may include frequent urination, different urine texture and odor, or increased desire to drink water.

Enlarged Lymph Nodes: Swelling and enlargement of lymph nodes in different parts of the body.

Gastrointestinal Problems: Gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea and vomiting may also be seen.

Since the incubation period of the disease can be 2 to 3 years, it is important that cats have regular veterinary check-ups.

How is Leishmaniasis Diagnosed in Cats?

Leishmaniasis is usually diagnosed based on clinical signs, epidemiologic data and laboratory tests. These tests usually include blood tests and tissue sampling to detect the presence of the parasite. These include cytology, histology, isolation or polymer chain reaction (PCR).

What is Leishmaniasis Treatment in Cats?

Treatment is usually a long-term and intensive process. Various antiparasitic drugs are used and treatment can take several months. Despite treatment, the parasite may not be completely removed from the body and the risk of relapse may persist. It is therefore recommended to eat a high quality, protein-rich diet during and after treatment. In cases where skin lesions are advanced, various surgical interventions can be applied.

Is Leishmaniasis in Cats Contagious?

Leishmaniasis is not transmitted to humans or other cats through direct contact with cats. However, an infected cat can transmit the Leishmania parasite to other living things through bites or blood.

Is Leishmaniasis Fatal?

Leishmaniasis can be potentially fatal if left untreated. Variations in the course and effects of the disease can be observed. These variables depend on the type of parasite, the general health and immune system of the infected cat.
