Medium-sized and round-shaped, Scottish Straights maintain the sweet appearance and character of kittens even as they get older. This breed is very similar to the Scottish Fold, but the distinguishing feature of the Scottish Straight is its erect ears. Their affectionate temperament makes them a real source of happiness for the families they live with, and for this reason they are preferred by many families. If you have a quiet lifestyle, the Scottish Straight may be the cat for you because they love spending time with their owners, sleeping on their laps and resting comfortably. Of course, their habit of sleeping on laps does not mean that they have a lap-loving nature. These cats like to stand on all fours and do not like to be held.
Scottish Straight History
Scottish Straights, along with Scottish Folds, belong to the Scottish breed family. Both breeds have long and short haired variations. Scottish Straights are almost identical to Scottish Folds; Their only distinguishing feature is their flat, erect ears.
Scottish Straights have their origins in a white barn cat named Susie. Shepherd William Ross, who saw Susie with this unique ear structure on a farm in Scotland in 1961, asked the owner of the barn if he could have a kitten from this cat.
Ross bred the fold-eared kitten he received from Susie with an orange tabby. Later, he mated another of this kitten with a white British Shorthair, and as a result of this mating, five cats with folded ears were born, which laid the foundation of the Scottish Fold breed. Some kittens had normal ears and these cats formed the Scottish Straight breed.
Scottish Straight Personality and Character Traits
Scottish Straight is a loving cat breed with a curious and intelligent nature. They generally prefer to stand on their feet and interact this way rather than being carried on their lap. Scottish Straights are known for being sweet and friendly. Their simple and affectionate demeanor makes them ideal pets for many families.
A Scottish Straight can follow you from room to room throughout the house. They even have the capacity to learn skills such as opening door cabinets or playing games.
Many pet owners around the world accept and adore these kitties as a member of their family. They can accompany people of all ages not only with their appearance, but also with their affectionate and friendly personalities.
Scottish Straight Physical Characteristics
Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears. However, those who carry the folded ear gene are known to have their ears curled 18-24 days after birth. Scottish Straight cats, also known as straight-eared Scottish Folds, are equally cute and cuddly compared to their fold-eared siblings. Scottish Straights can be found in many colors and patterns and often have copper-coloured eyes. They are known for their round facial features, chubby body and head structure. Their ears are distinctive with rounded tips and can vary in size from small to medium sized.
Fur colors and patterns include; They bear plain, tabby, tortoiseshell, two-coloured, spotted and shaded markings.
Scottish Straight General Care
Scottish Straight Feather Care
Scottish Straight cats are known for both their short-haired and long-haired variations. Therefore, feather care may differ in both variations. This breed's coat care is relatively easy. However, as with every cat breed, regular coat care for Scottish Straight cats is important for both the cat's health and minimizing hair problems at home.
- Shorthair Scottish Straight: Brushing once a week is usually sufficient. This removes dead hair and prevents matting.
- Long-Haired Scottish Straight: In this variation, brushing 2-3 times a week is recommended to prevent the coat from becoming tangled and matted.
Scottish Straight Exercise
Scottish Straight cats are generally calm, friendly and one of the cat breeds suitable for living at home. However, this calm nature does not mean that they do not need regular exercise. Regular exercise and activity is necessary for them to live an active and healthy life.
Scottish Straight cats are cats with a medium level of energy. Therefore, they need daily games and exercises to keep them active. Interactive games, chase games or toys such as feather balls where they can burn off their energy are ideal.
Scottish Straight Health
Scottish Straight cats are mostly known as healthy and hardy animals. However, this cat breed may be prone to some health problems, just like other cat breeds. Being aware of these health problems allows Scottish Straights to live healthier lives.
- Genetic Health Problems: Scottish Straight cats are closely related to the Scottish Fold breed and therefore may have some similar genetic health problems. They may carry an autosomal dominant gene that causes problems, especially in cartilage and bone development. This condition can cause abnormal bone development, especially evident in the ears and legs.
- Ear Infections: Although Scottish Straight cats do not have straight ears, they can be prone to ear infections due to the characteristics of their ear structure. That's why regular ear check and cleaning is important.
- Tooth and Gum Problems: The oral structure of Scottish Straight cats may be prone to tooth and gum problems. Therefore, it is recommended to brush the teeth of these cats regularly and check their oral health at annual check-ups.
Scottish Straight Nutrition
These felines need a high-quality diet. Since the nutritional needs of kittens, adults and older cats differ, it is recommended that you choose a food appropriate for your pet's age. To keep their calories under control, it is necessary to measure their meals and reduce their portions if necessary.
