Pomeranians are generally outgoing and love to attract attention. Despite all this, like most "toy breed dogs" they can become aggressive very easily and can perform far beyond their size!
Pomeranian History
Pomeranians, also called Pom, have a very long history. Named after Pomeranians from Pomerania (Poland and Germany), their origins can be traced back to the Arctic and are linked to the large Spitz-type dogs. Large Spitz dogs are large, cold-weather dogs used to guard herds and pull sleds.
The Pomeranian reached a turning point in 1888 when Queen Victoria brought a Pomeranian dog from Italy. The size of this dog, which was much smaller than the first Pomeranians, influenced other breeds, and the breed's size began to shrink over time. Queen Victoria contributed greatly to the popularization of the Pomeranian and the breed became very popular among the British aristocracy.
Pomeranian Personality and Character Traits
One of the most prominent character traits of Pomeranians is their intelligence and playfulness. For this reason, they need a lot of mental stimulation and play areas. Although they are sociable, Pomeranians value their independence and love to learn. Pomeranians are independent dogs and tend to make decisions on their own. Therefore, it is important to be patient and determined during training. They can exhibit aggressive behavior towards other dog breeds and can be very suspicious of strangers. Pomeranians do not get along very well with children, but they will be loyal to you if you establish good communication.
Pomeranian Physical Characteristics
With their upward curling tails, miniature builds and small erect ears, Pomeranians impress with their cuteness.
The most distinctive features of Pomeranians, which weigh between 1.5 - 3 kg, are their thick and fluffy fur. Pomeranians have a two-layered fur structure, with the outer layers consisting of hard and smooth hairs and the lower layers consisting of soft, dense and fluffy hairs. This fur structure helps to keep them warm in cold climates. Pomeranians can be found in many different colors.
Pomeranian General Care
Pomeranian Feather Care
Pomeranians have a double-layered coat. They should be brushed daily to prevent tangles and remove dead hairs on their dense undercoat and long upper coat. Pomeranians should be bathed every 2-3 months as they can easily trap dirt and dust due to their coat structure. Care should be taken not to overdo it, as over-washing can cause the skin to lose its natural oils.
Pomeranian Health
There are some genetic disorders that Pomeranians have. Some of these are as follows:
- Hypoglycemia
- Patellar luxation (dislocation of the kneecap) in Pomeranians
- Entropion (inverted eyelid)
- Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart)
The most important and most common condition is hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia can occur not only in Pomeranians, but in all "toy breed dogs". Hypoglycemia is simply the depletion of sugar stores in the body and the resulting lack of energy.
Pomeranian Nutrition
As with all "toy breed dogs", Pomeranians are low in fat. This can affect their energy and general health. Therefore, it is very important that they consume balanced and healthy foods. Since their metabolism works very fast, they need to eat frequent but small meals throughout the day. They should also always have access to fresh, clean water.
