Kangal shepherd dogs, which stand out with their strong and agile structures, are known as the owner of the steppe in Anatolia. Thanks to their superior shepherding skills and protective instincts, they can protect farm animals such as sheep and lambs from dangerous wild flocks by establishing dominance even in very large areas. In contrast to their large size and deterrent attitude, they are a very friendly breed. However, they still need to be subjected to a good education. They can be easily raised with an authoritarian leader.
 

History

Also known as Kangal, Sivas Kangali, Karabaş, Anatolian Shepherd Dog and Shepherd Dog in Turkey, Kangal's loyalty and strong character come from its 6000-year history, which is believed to be the descendant of the oldest domestic dog breed. This breed, whose story dates back to the Babylonians, is thought to have migrated with the Turks from Central Asia, is mentioned in the archives of the Ottoman Empire and in Evliya Çelebi's Travelogue, is thought to have evolved to adapt to a nomadic lifestyle while protecting herds of sheep, goats and cattle from predators such as wolves, bears and coyotes over the centuries.

Kangal, which is regarded as a national wealth in Turkey, has increased its popularity as a companion dog in many countries, especially the United States and the United Kingdom in recent years.

Personality and Character Traits

The most important feature of the Kangal breed, which are very good observant, patient and intelligent animals, is that it protects the area under its responsibility to the end, regardless of the danger.

The Kangal not only protects the herd entrusted to it, but also anyone in need of help such as children and the elderly, with great dedication. Behind its extremely serious and intimidating appearance, it actually has a loving, gentle, and protective character. However, in times of danger, it can become an unstoppable defender. In addition, owning a Kangal Shepherd Dog, one of the world's strongest and most intelligent breeds, requires the same strength and dedication. Kangals are not only calm, but also authoritative, demanding, and playful. This requires the person accompanying them to be determined, patient, energetic, and strong in communication. In addition to all this compassion, belonging, and loyalty, the Kangal breed has an independent and relatively difficult-to-train side. Especially for those who are new to owning a Kangal, it is advisable to seek help from an experienced trainer.
 

Appearance

Their light yellow, tan, dirty white or brown fur serves a great camouflage function for them to hide among herds, as well as to regulate their body temperature in any climate. Their strong and muscular physique, thick, fluffy fur and distinctive mane around their neck resemble that of a lion. Their teeth are sharp and strong, and the area around their eyes, ears, mouth and nose is black. Their balanced, relaxed and distinctive gait, large size, and generally brown almond-shaped eyes give the impression that they are keenly observing their surroundings.

Kangals have been accustomed to living in open spaces and guarding the wilderness for a long time, making it very difficult for them to adapt to city life and small apartment spaces. The most suitable and appropriate places for Kangals are areas with large farms or spacious gardens where they can interact with other animals.
 

General Care

The maintenance of the thick fur that makes the life of Kangal shepherd dogs easier in all conditions is achieved by a weekly grooming routine, which is sufficient to keep them healthy. Since this breed spends most of its time in the wild, they do not need to be bathed unless they have a medical condition. Bathing is not recommended because it can disrupt the oil and moisture levels in their skin and fur.

The nail care needs of garden Kangals, who live entirely in nature and are raised semi-domesticated, also vary. Those in the wild do not need their nails trimmed, while those raised in areas like gardens may require regular maintenance.

Kangals, who need plenty of exercise to stay healthy, should be taken for walks and have playtime if they don't have areas to run and expend their energy.

Although they are generally loyal and affectionate to their human companions, they can sometimes display stubborn and defiant behavior. Consistent training and plenty of socialization given at an early age help Kangals become well-behaved and confident. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate whether you have the appropriate resources and lifestyle to take care of them before adopting Kangals.
 

 

Health

The Kangal shepherd dog is a sturdy breed that can withstand various conditions due to its physical strength, but it is essential to be aware of some breed-specific health issues and monitor them closely. Some common health problems seen in this breed include:

• Ear infections
• Eye problems

As with any breed, keeping up with vaccination schedules, regular visits to the veterinarian, and closely monitoring areas where the dog may be medically vulnerable are the safest ways to minimize potential health problems.
 

Nutrition

As a large and powerful breed, the Kangal shepherd dog requires food proportionate to its size. If they live in limited areas where they cannot move enough, their food consumption should be controlled. Uncontrolled feeding can lead to overweight issues and cause the dog to move uncontrollably due to excess energy that it cannot release. A suitable and balanced diet will be sufficient for weight control.
